January 2003 and the weather changes and becomes much colder and more seasonal: Winter arrives

Ashford in the Water, near Bakewell, Derbyshire. January 2003. Winter finally arrives.

The River Wye (seen here at Ashford) normally a tranquil but fast flowing river is awash due to the recent heavy rainfall

Ivy clings to the trees. Despite moderate snowfall across the High Peak, Ashford witnessed only a flurry of snowfall in comparison.

The river level is similar to that in August, but the flow is more powerful at Ashford.

Mallard shelter in the light currents as the angry water speeds by at Ashford.

The A5270 just past Chelmorton near Buxton, Derbyshire.

Cheedale and the Wye Valley, near Topley Pike Quarry. The midday sun has melted the snow on the far hillside, whilst the sheltered hill still has snow.

These houses were built during the 1860s by the Midland Railway Company for their workers. Only the region above the rooftops catches enough sun to melt the snow and ice.

Torr Valley signpost near Buxton. The valley below is known as Cheedale.

Frozen floodwater at Bakewell, Derbyshire.

The floodwaters at Bakewell were the result of heavy and prolonged rain in December 2002.

This rain caused the River Wye in Bakewell to burst its banks in places. Eventually as the plummeting temperatures came in January this floodwater froze.
